RMX-IGNITE

The RMX-IGNITE isn't a mixer or a player — it's an effector and sampler that sits alongside your setup and adds a layer of effects, rolls and samples on top of whatever you're playing. DJs use it to add a personal signature: a sudden echo throw, a stutter roll into a drop, a vocal sample fired over the mix. It's the modern descendant of Pioneer's classic RMX-1000, with far better sound (96kHz/32-bit) and bigger, friendlier pads. There are two ways to connect it. The simplest is through your mixer's send/return (effects loop) or master insert, so the RMX processes your whole mix. The other is over Pro DJ Link, where it syncs automatically to the tempo of your players. Either way, once it's connected and reading your BPM, every effect and roll locks to the beat. The top of the unit splits into two halves: the 3-Band FX section on one side (effects you apply to the low, mid or high frequencies) and the sampler with its four pads on the other. Learn those two halves and you can drop the RMX into any gig and instantly sound more creative.

The RMX-IGNITE's headline is that its effects work per frequency band — you can throw an effect onto just the bass, just the mids, or just the highs, which is far more musical than smearing one effect over everything. Within that, there are two flavours. Lever FX are instant bursts for capturing a moment: a flick gives you an immediate Echo, Reverb, Juggle, Reverse, Solo or Stretch on the band you choose. They snap on and off, perfect for a quick stutter on the snare or a reverse cymbal lifting into a drop. Isolate FX are the smooth, dynamic transforms — Tape Echo, Reverb, Drive, Filter, Ducker and Rhythm — designed to evolve over a few bars for build-ups and breakdowns; a slow filter or tape echo on the highs while the bass keeps driving is a gorgeous, professional transition. The skill is the same one that runs through all DJing: restraint and timing. Pick one band, one effect, and use it to accent a moment the music is already building toward. A single reverse into the drop beats a constant wall of effects every time.

The four illuminated pads are your sampler. Out of the box they come loaded with 20 curated sounds, and you can import your own — vocal stabs, air horns, drum hits, your tags — over USB or Pro DJ Link using the Sample Manager. Tap a pad to fire a sound over your mix; because the unit is synced to your tempo, looped samples drop in perfectly on time. What makes it an instrument rather than a soundboard is overdub looping: you can record and layer sounds onto a pad live, building up a little groove a layer at a time — lay down a clap, add a shaker, add a vocal chop — all looping in time underneath your track. It's a powerful way to add a unique, evolving element to a breakdown or to bridge two tracks with something that's entirely yours. Start simple: load a couple of your favourite samples, learn to fire them cleanly on the beat, and practise dropping one in at the right moment. Once that feels natural, try building a short overdub loop during a quiet section. Used with taste, the sampler is what turns a good selector into a memorable performer.

Rolls are one of the most satisfying tools on the RMX-IGNITE. Sample Roll instantly repeats a sound in a rhythmic pattern — there are ten patterns to choose from — so you can take a single hit and turn it into a machine-gun stutter that builds tension into a drop. It's the classic 'roll into the chorus' move, and because it's locked to your tempo it always lands in time. Groove Roll takes it further by letting you combine multiple roll buttons at once, layering different rhythmic patterns to create flowing, evolving grooves that are unique each time you play them. Instead of one repeating stutter you get a shifting, polyrhythmic texture you perform with your fingers — a genuinely expressive, improvisational tool. The way to learn rolls is slowly and musically: find the build-up before a drop, start a simple roll a bar or two out, and let it tighten as the moment arrives, then release it right on the downbeat. That tension-and-release is what makes a crowd's hands go up. As always, a roll used once at the right moment is electric; a roll used constantly just becomes noise.

Your samples and loops don't have to stay static — the RMX-IGNITE has a dedicated set of sampler effects to shape them, each controllable with a single knob so you can perform them in real time. There are six: Echo adds repeats and space; Space opens up a reverb wash; Filter sweeps the brightness up or down; Pitch bends the sample higher or lower; Decay changes how quickly the sound fades; and Swing shifts the timing for a looser, more human feel. These turn a simple loop into something alive. Sweep the Filter up as your overdub loop builds, add Echo as it leaves, or use Pitch for a riser effect — small movements that make your layered groove breathe with the music. Because it's one knob per effect, you can grab and ride a parameter instantly without menus. Combine this with everything before it and you have a complete creative chain: fire a sample, loop and overdub it, roll it for tension, and shape it with an effect as it evolves. That's how the RMX-IGNITE lets you build a moment that's unmistakably yours — and doing it live, in front of a crowd, is where DJing becomes performance.

Bringing the RMX-IGNITE into a live set is about choosing your moments. The unit shines in the spaces between tracks and at the peaks: a reverse-and-reverb lift into a drop, a stutter roll through a build-up, a signature vocal sample over a breakdown, or a tape-echo transition between two songs. Used at those moments it elevates your set; used constantly it clutters it. The best RMX performances are mostly about knowing when not to touch it. Develop your signature deliberately. Pick two or three moves you love — say, a 3-band filter transition, a roll into the chorus, and one trademark sample — and drill them until they're automatic, so in the moment you're feeling the music instead of hunting for controls. Prepare your samples ahead of time so your own sounds are loaded and ready. And record your sets: listening back tells you exactly where an effect landed and where it got in the way. The RMX-IGNITE is a creativity machine, but creativity with taste is what audiences remember — learn restraint and timing here and every set you play will carry your fingerprint.
